Concert Review: Lucy Dacus

Lucy Dacus headlined the first CD102.5 $10.25 Series show at A&R Music Bar on Sunday evening, and the show was worth every penny and more. Dacus’ hit, “Strange Torpedo,” has been in heavy rotation on CD102.5, and she was also recently in Columbus opening for Hamilton Leithauser at the Newport Music Hall. Dacus’ sound has a warm indie quality that immediately draws you in, and her lyrics have very honest and real, sensibility.

In “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore” she echoes the thoughts of so many music fans when she sings, “Is there room in the band? I don't need to be the front man. If not, then I'll be the biggest fan.” In addition to the tracks from debut album, No Burden, Dacus treated the crowd to two new songs which were among the highlights of the evening. Dacus and her band seemed excited to play the new tunes, “Time Fighter” and “Pillar of Truth” for the crowd, and both songs were very well received. Dacus said that the band just finished recording their second album, but that unfortunately it probably won’t be released for a year or so. Hopefully, some singles will trickle out this year before the new album drops.

Dacus, hailing from Richmond, VA, initially released her debut album, No Burden, via regional label EggHunt Records in early 2016, but was subsequently signed to Matador, who re-released the album last September.

Dacus brought along fellow Richmond, VA act, Spooky Cool (pictured above), to open for her. Spooky Cool, a five-piece alt-rock band featuring dueling vocals of Zac Hryciak and Paula Lucy, certainly lived up to at least the latter half of their name. Far from standard alt-rock, Spooky Cool has incorporated many prog-rock elements, with changing tempos, rhythms, and chord progressions, throughout their songs. Drummer Lee Spratley did an excellent job keeping everything on track for the band all through their set. Unfortunately, Spooky Cool hasn’t released any recorded music yet, but hopefully will soon.

Columbus act, Many Rooms, opened the show.

Catch the next CD102.5 $10.25 Series show on May 8th with White Reaper at The Basement.
